Dan, With a Hammer

What man through yonder window breaks?

Here’s a peek at the view from my living room window a couple of days ago.

It’s Dan, with a hammer.

In preparation for the coming winter, we have been replacing some of our windows with more energy efficient ones. And by “‘we” I mean Dan.

Because I don’t do that kind of thing. He does.

When we were dating in high school, Dan once drew me a picture of a rabbit. I held on to that drawing for years... READ MORE

Sanctifying The Daily Grind

Happy Feast of St. Martha!
http://www.nationalgallery.org.uk/paintings/diego-velazquez-christ-in-the-house-of-martha-and-mary

It intrigues me that though Mary chose the better part, it is Martha who has the feast day.

Fr. Z. offers a reflection on this—and an analysis of this Velazquez painting— here.

A taste:

In this life there is always a tension between the active and the contemplative, the daily grind and a true Christian’s desire for silence, recollection and prayer.  There is a tension trap as well in the desire to be recognized or to have this or that position which is not to be had.

How do we rise to the challenge of bringing something of prayer and reflection to our daily work?

Click through for his thoughts.

Giving Thanks

and getting it in writing

When I was growing up, every year on my birthday my mom would give me a pack of thank you cards as one of my gifts. This was her not-so-subtle way of reminding me to show gratitude, in the form of a written note, to any friends and family who had given me a present.

Her methods worked; to this day each of my siblings does an incredible job of sending thank you notes whenever I give a gift, including... READ MORE

Ordinary People

I wonder what you think of this short essay on everyday people.

It began as a comment on a blog post, but left such an impression on the blogger that he separated it into its own post.

In it, a manager reflects on his work force, and finds that he admires the people around him deeply, though each lives with a serious cross or dysfunction.

One example:

“I have one Moslem woman who is the sole support... READ MORE

Getting Our Hands Dirty

How my garden grows

Juliette and I picked up some plants yesterday and now my hard-working 10-year-old is putting my abandoned poor, pathetic herb garden to good use.

She is putting some herbs in there, for sure. But this girl opts for “decorative” gardening a lot more than her mother ever did. Even back when I kept up this small spot, I used to keep it filled with stuff I could use to season focaccia bread.

Gardening... READ MORE

Should I Be a 'Working Mom'?

Ask a Priest vol. 13

Q: I am an at-home mom of 4 young children (none of them in school yet) and it’s terrible to admit, but I can’t help but feel sometimes that God means for me to do “more than this.”

I am an attorney and practiced successfully for several years before getting married and becoming a mom. My kids mean the world to me, but isn’t it possible that God doesn’t mean for me to be staying home with them like... READ MORE

Casual Fridays - There's a Saint for That

Who is your occupational patron saint?

I woke up this morning later than planned and in a bit of a frenzy.  In the darkness, I stumbled to my home office sleepily and was met by my usual stacks of work.  I’m a stacker - I tend to be a visual organizer and prefer to keep things on or near my desk until they are completed.  Today, the stacks are especially high since I’m hoping to take Holy Week offline.  That will require a great deal of... Still Cleaning

a never-ending task

I have decided that this will be my last week of participating in 40 Bags in 40 Days. It’s not that I don’t love this, because I absolutely do. In fact, that’s the problem—I think I love it a little too much.

The thing about cleaning and purging and getting organized is that you can be as relaxed or as obsessive as you want to be. And right now, in my hormonal state, I see no end in sight. I can do... READ MORE
