Yours, Mine & Ours

Do you have your "own" money?

I was listening to a popular radio talk show in the car the other day and a particular caller caught my attention.

It was a woman calling in to complain about the fights she always seemed to get in with her husband over money. The show’s host asked for a few details about the couple’s financial practices and then concluded that the problem was that they pooled their money.

“You need your own bank... READ MORE

Good St. Joseph, Pray for Us

May 1: Feast of St. Joseph the Worker

Lord God, You have created all things,
and imposed on man the necessity of work.
Grant that, following St. Joseph’s example,
and under his protection,
we may accomplish the works You give us
and obtain the rewards You promise.
Amen

Why I Stay Home

At-home parenting is an 'opportunity of a lifetime'

“Why?”

My old newspaper colleague sat across from me in the diner booth. Irritated, he asked me again, “Why?” with a quizzical smile.

The smile was there so I wouldn’t be offended. The quizzical was there because he was.

The three year old sat next to me and the baby was banging on the tray of the high chair because I was a little slow with the eggs. Business meetings with babies are always an odd... READ MORE

‘Keeping Women Down’ With Breastfeeding

I suppose it was only a matter of time before I read a feminist, anti-breastfeeding article like Hannah Rosin’s The Case Against Breastfeeding in this month’s Atlantic (HT: Crunchy Con).

Rosin is unconvinced by medical evidence that breastfeeding is a superior form of nutrition for human babies. And she may have a point there. Some of the studies comparing breastfeeding to formula... READ MORE

Sweet Victory!

I dreamed the impossible dream

Today, I did something I’ve never been able to do in my life—I made a menu for the entire month, and I have the food ready and waiting in my freezer!

The way it happened (for those who have a similar struggle in their own life) was I did things backward. Instead of fretting about meals and spending hours flipping through cookbooks, I simply went to Sam’s and bought what looked good for a good price.... READ MORE

Dad Not Home?

Getting through it

One of the areas in which our family is incredibly fortunate is my husband’s job.

He is well-compensated for work he finds both stimulating and enjoyable, his commute is a mere fifteen minutes, he has flexible hours, and he rarely has to work more than forty of them in a week.

I discovered recently that I have not been properly appreciating the last part of that deal.

Bryan’s team is working on a... READ MORE
