Daily Lenten Meditations

«  March 2010  »

Sun Mon Tue Wed Thu Fri Sat
  • Pray Light a candle. Every time you pass that candle today, offer a prayer of thanks. Don’t ask for anything. Just thank him.
  • Fast Don’t cut corners. Even if no one will know, complete today’s work thoroughly.
  • Give Touch is a powerful thing. Make an effort today to touch your children: a hug, a shoulder rub, a tousled head -- especially the bigger ones
1
  • Pray Make five minutes in the morning, at midday and in the evening to be still, silent, and alone, only asking God to infuse your soul with his will.
  • Fast No noise today. Turn off the TV, the radio, the iPod. Find God in the silence.
  • Give Pay particular unsolicited attention to your least demanding child today.
2
  • Pray Begin a gratitude journal. At the end of the day, jot down five things for which you are grateful. Think upon these things.
  • Fast Remember the first time you had a moment alone with your first child. What did you promise him? Do that. Be that.
  • Give We can only expect what we inspect. For every task you assign today, follow through and before it’s truly finished ensure that there is praise from you.
3
  • Pray “My sheep listen to my voice. I know them and they follow me." -- John 10:27
  • Fast Every time a child interrupts you today, stop what you are doing and look into his eyes as he talks.
  • Give “Kind words can be short and easy to speak, but their echoes are truly endless.” -- Blessed Teresa of Calcutta Speak kindly all day long.
4
  • Pray Ask God to show you how weak and small you are. Open your heart to see it.
  • Fast Don’t argue today. As much as possible give up, give in, give way.
  • Give When you are tempted to put on the TV for kids today, pull out a stack of favorite picture books instead. Invite the kids to join you on the couch.
5
  • Pray Take a walk, even if it’s cold or raining. Leave your iPod at home.
  • Fast Think of someone whose life you are tempted to envy and then choke out these words: Thank you, God, for the blessings you have given to X. Help me to see my own.
  • Give Think about the kind of person your husband married. Be that person for him today.
6
7
  • Pray "Love consumes us only in the measure of our self-surrender." -- St. Therese of Lisieux
  • Fast As you go about your daily routine today, remember that you are expecting someone very important for dinner tonight. Together with your children, work towards your husband’s homecoming as if you were expecting to welcome a king back to his castle.
  • Give “You can do nothing with children unless you win their confidence and love by bringing them into touch with oneself, by breaking through all the hindrances that keep them at a distance. We must accommodate ourselves to their tastes, we must make ourselves like them.” -- St. John Bosco
8
  • Pray Take this quote to prayer today and listen to God’s answer: “Real love is demanding. I would fail in my mission if I did not tell you so. Love demands a personal commitment to the will of God.” -- John Paul II
  • Fast Stop looking for encouragement and approval. Genuinely encourage and affirm someone else instead.
  • Give Let your child choose a huge stack of picture books (use that word “huge” when you ask her to gather them). Read them all to her today.
9
  • Pray Persevere. “He who does not give up prayer cannot possibly continue to offend God habitually. Either he will give up prayer, or he will give up sinning.” -- St. Alphonsus Liguori
  • Fast Don’t forget that the only pedestal you need ever stand on, is the one your husband and children build for you.
  • Give Focus on your home today. The world can find another volunteer, but your husband and children have only you.
10
  • Pray Insist on quiet from all your children during naptime today. Pray the Divine Mercy chaplet.
  • Fast We’re half way through. Compare yourself now only to yourself when Lent began. Tweak the plan.
  • Give Reach out to a local friend today. Reconnect.
11
  • Pray Ask God to make you humble and lowly.
  • Fast Don’t compare or complain. Do compliment.
  • Give Pack a picnic and go somewhere to eat it with your children. If the weather is prohibitive, build a tent in the living room and it eat there. Sit on the ground with them. Be fully present.

Casual Fridays - Above and Beyond

Do you go the extra mile in your work?

I want to send a special hank you to Daniel, the twenty-something year old miracle worker who inspired this week’s installment of Casual Fridays.  Honestly, sometimes one of the most difficult parts of blogging is coming up with good ideas.  It’s always amazing to me how the Holy Spirit sends me people like Daniel when I’m feeling most “brain dead” and uninspired…coincidence?  I think not.

Yesterday,... READ MORE

You Deserve a Raise!

Cardinal suggests payment to stay home

For those who stay home, here is a story from Zenit that should encourage you—even if you never officially see one single dime as a result.

The president of the Pontifical Council for the Family is stressing the importance of work done by those in the home and suggesting economic compensation for it.

Cardinal Ennio Antonelli called for financial and professional perks to encourage families when he... READ MORE

Nothing To Do With Blonde

...everything to do with age

Here’s a four-second look at why I fear returning to a formal office job when my kids are grown.

W/ a polite nod to my FB friend Pam.

Casual Fridays - Teamwork

Who's on your support team?

Every Friday, when I linger here to ponder work issues, I say a quiet prayer of thanksgiving for my most important co-worker, my husband Greg.  That’s him over there, holding that ridiculously oversized cover of my new book (coming soon!).  The thing is, without Greg’s support and encouragement, none of my life’s major joys and accomplishments would have been possible.

Wednesday night was the perfect... READ MORE

Resuming Routines, Grinding Gears

How's your transition going?

Have you ever learned to drive a standard transmission? You know that horrible grating, grinding sound the gears make when you shift them incorrectly? I think I heard that sound today.

It was coming from my brain.

Like many others today, I am doing my very best to make a smooth move from the relaxed holiday schedule we have enjoyed the past two weeks to one that brings all of us back to school, back... READ MORE

Required Socializing

This week's "Casual Fridays" topic looks at work-related holiday events and how to handle them...

It’s likely that this weekend, you may have at least one work-related social function on your calendar.  It appears that the first weekend of December is the official start of the office Christmas party season.  While this year’s gatherings may be a bit more understated due to economic challenges, your company will still likely observe the holidays in some fashion that involves after-hours gathering.... Why We Work

This week's "Casual Fridays" conversation looks at our motivation for working.

During last week’s introduction to our Casual Fridays feature, I was struck by the varied responses and comments.  I so greatly appreciate your chiming in with potential topic ideas and just generally being kind and supportive of one another.

This week, before we begin diving into specific topics, I would like to pose another rather general “getting to know you” type of query.  I’d love to know WHY... READ MORE

What Child is This?

Coming up with a name for your baby

When Henry was born, I thought we had a name picked out. Turns out, the name I like didn’t really jive with my husband. I didn’t know this until after the baby was born and I told people we were thinking about (insert name here) and then Paul kept adding “but we’re not sure.”

Eighteen hours and 10,000 baby names later, we arrived at Henry (a name that had been on the short list with every other boy... READ MORE

A new blog series focuses on work and career issues

This morning, I had the pleasure of attending the monthly breakfast meeting for our local Catholic Professional and Business Club.  The featured speaker, Enrico Hernandez, gave a fantastic talk on “Hiring Jesus of Nazareth as your Leadership Consultant”.  I left the meeting enthused and inspired about putting some of Rico’s suggestions to work in my own professional life.

I have reached the point... READ MORE
